Farmer FIRST
Farmer FIRST (Farm Injury, Response, Safety & Treatment) is a one day course for pre-hospital practitioners hosted by University College Cork (UCC) Emergency Medicine & Pre-Hospital Care Unit
This course is fully immersive which is facilitated on a working farm near Killarney, Co. Kerry. The course is built around a series of six teaching stations where response to common farm injuries such as falls, machinery entrapments, slurry incidents, farmer isolation, equestrian and animal goring are taught. Simulated scenarios using small group teaching maximises learning opportunities in this often challenging and unique setting.
Faculty comprises pre-hospital specialists, arming and other subject matter experts Crew Resource Management (CRM) principles are adhered to throughout the course, with briefing and debriefing at each teaching station led by a group leader. The course culminates with a final display of local emergency services responding to a simulated quad bike incident. Learning outcomes are set out for each teaching station and UCC certifies the course.
